EGR systems operate in one of the dirtiest environments on an engine. Exhaust gases carry soot and combustion residue, while crankcase vapors can add oily deposits to passages that may already be relatively narrow.

When Cleaning Will Not Solve the Problem
EGR-related faults are not always caused by carbon. A failed actuator, damaged wiring, defective position sensor, leaking vacuum line, broken pressure sensor, or restricted exhaust system can all affect EGR operation.
